Overview

This mini-course presents ways to facilitate positive youth development in out-of-school time (OST) programs. You’ll learn how to help students develop essential traits such as self-awareness, social awareness, self-management, responsible decision-making, and relationship skills. These skills contribute to a safe, supportive, and engaging learning environment.

By the end of this session, you’ll be able to:

  • define positive youth development and its importance in OST programs;
  • identify strategies to help students grow in key social and emotional skills;
  • understand how positive youth development can enhance student attendance, engagement, and retention while reducing unwanted behaviors.

The 10 pillars are listening, empathy, healing, self-awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, growth, and community.

This mini-course helps out-of-school time program leaders and frontline staff understand how stress, trauma, sensory needs, and other factors can affect behavior. It demonstrates ways to guide student behavior through reflection, redirection, and restorative practices that build trust and accountability.
